Marcelo was fired by Fluminense because he didn’t agree with his manager’s strategy and wasn’t allowed to come off the bench during their game on Saturday.
He left the Bernabeu in 2022 after 15 very successful years in the Spanish city. He had won the Champions League five times.
His first season was with Olympiacos. Last year, he went back to his home country and signed with his old team, Fluminense.
His 68 games for the Brazilian team have helped them get to 12th place in the league.
But he wasn’t allowed to play again on Saturday because he got into a huge fight with boss Mano Menezes on the sidelines.
In the 90th minute, Fluminense still had a 2-1 lead over Gremio and the left back was stripped and ready to come on.
It was about time for Marcelo to come on as part of a double change that also brought on Marquinhos, a winger on loan from Arsenal.
Marcelo, who used to play for Real Madrid, seemed to disagree with what Menezes was telling him while he was on the sidelines.
The boss got very angry about this and then pushed Marcelo and told him to sit down again.
He went to the bench and put his bib back on.
In the end, he saw his team give up an equalizer in extra time, tying the game 2-2 between Fluminense and Gremio.
Fluminense has now said in a statement that Marcelo has left the club.
This is what it said: “Fluminense FC and Marcelo Vieira announce that the contract has been terminated by mutual agreement.”
“Marcello trained in the youth categories and returned to Fluminense in 2023, having helped win the 2023 Campeonato Carioca titles, the first-ever 2023 Conmebol Libertadores titles, and the 2024 Recopa.”
“The professional and personal ties between Fluminense and Marcelo are still strong.” Recently, the athlete’s name was written in stone in the field at the Xerém training center.
“Fluminense thanks Marcelo and will continue, as always, to support his success in all his challenges.”
Tancredi Palmeri, a journalist, said of Marcelo’s fight with Menezes, “I have never seen anything similar in elite football.”
One fan answered, “Respect to the coach for not giving up!”
“This is so rude,” said someone else.
“That’s right, he’s not bigger than the coach or the club,” said a third.
