Lorenzo Insigne may have only played eight minutes plus extra time in Toronto FC’s last game of the season on Saturday, and the team may have lost due to a goal scored in extra time, but the Italian did get one thing he wanted.
Messi got to take home an Insigne shirt that had been worn in a game in exchange. Ok, so maybe the best way to describe that shirt would be as “gently used.”
Messi’s jersey is often the first thing that players want to take after a game against the Argentina star. As it turns out, he is one of the best football players of all time, if not the best.
John Herdman, the head coach of TFC, and Richie Laryea, another DP, said on Friday that they couldn’t imagine one of their players going after Messi’s shirt if TFC lost to Miami.
If things went well for us, Herdman said, “I’m sure as soon as the final whistle blows, someone will be chasing for that shirt.” This was just over 24 hours before the game on Saturday. “I believe we would feel bad going shirt shopping if things didn’t go well.”
“Of course it would be great to get a jersey, but I think I’ll be the first one in queue for his,” Laryea had said. “That’s not how I am.” It’s not just me. There’s nothing I’ve heard from the guys. Since everyone knows we need to win this game, that stuff will probably be far from their minds.
Insigne’s introduction in the 82nd minute wasn’t the only important thing that happened with TFC’s highest-paid player on Saturday.
Before the game and at halftime, BMO Field cheered for Sebastian Giovinco, and fans went crazy whenever Messi touched the ball, came into view, or breathing. The south stand had a very different message for Insigne.
The number 24 on Insigne’s shirt was written clearly on a flag that was held high around the 24th minute.
