In a very exciting Madrid derby, the game had to be stopped because fans of Atletico Madrid seemed to throw things at Real goalie Thibaut Courtois.
At the Metropolitano Stadium, Eder Militao’s deflected shot gave the guests the lead just after the hour mark. The first 45 minutes were tense, and neither team had many good chances to score.
Courtois went crazy celebrating the Brazilian’s goal against his old team, which made things worse for the home fans behind the Belgian goal.
During his three years on loan at Los Colchoneros from 2011 to 2014, the former Chelsea goalkeeper played more than 150 games in all categories for the club.
Television cameras caught him taking the things that people had thrown at him off the ground. They looked like several lighters and a plastic bag.
Referee Mateo Busquets stopped the game and led both sets of players off the field to try to restore order as things inside the stadium were about to get worse.
However, while the game was being briefly stopped, Atletico manager Diego Simeone could be seen yelling at the home fans to stop.
He was helped by some of his players, like Koke and Jose Maria Gimenez, a defender for Uruguay.
Two and a half hours of delay later, both teams returned to the field, and the game began again with Atletico desperately trying to tie the score.
To make up for the long break, eight minutes were added to the end of the 90 minutes.
“Atletico de Madrid wishes to express its rejection of the throwing of objects that took place from a section of the south stand in the 68th minute of the match vs. Real Madrid,” Atletico said in a statement after the incident.
“The club’s security staff has been working with the police to find those responsible. One person has already been named.” The club will treat the people involved in this event according to the rules that are in place for very serious cases.
Atletico’s substitute Angel Correa seemed to have tied the game, but the goal was initially ruled out. However, a VAR review reversed the decision, giving the home team the equaliser and sending the fans into a frenzy.
But the drama wasn’t over yet. Late in the game, Marcos Llorente committed a cunning foul that got him a yellow card at first, but after being reviewed by the video assistant, it was changed to a straight red.
