Andriy Lunin, the custodian for Real Madrid, has agreed to a new three-year deal with the team.
The Ukrainian international, whose contract had one year remaining, was anticipated to remain at the team throughout the summer transfer window and was reportedly close to signing a new contract, according to a previous report from The Athletic.
He will now remain at the Santiago Bernabeu until 2028 thanks to a new contract he inked with Real Madrid.
Prior to the conclusion of the previous campaign, Madrid and Lunin verbally agreed on a new contract.
The 25-year-old was hesitant to stay longer with the Spanish team, though, because of Courtois’ significance and the potential loss of playing time that would follow.
With a deal that ran through 2024, Lunin left FC Zorya Luhansk to join Madrid in 2018. He extended in 2019 through 2025, despite the club did not formally announce the agreement. He replaced Thibaut Courtois as Real Madrid’s starting custodian during the 2023β2024 campaign when the latter had a knee ligament injury in August of 2023.
That season, he made 31 appearances across all competitions, recording 12 clean sheets and contributing to his team’s La Liga and Champions League victories.
This season, in all five of Madrid’s games, he has not been utilised as a replacement.
