The goal mirrored his strike against Fenerbahce in 2004

Rooney, 38, proved that he still had plenty of ability left as he whipped in a beautiful goal from a free-kick.

The now Plymouth manager curled his effort from 25 yards into the top left corner.

A second wrote: “None of our players has scored a free kick goal since Cristiano Ronaldo in 2022 against Norwich. Shameless.”

A third commented: “Free agent, by the way, he never lost it.”

A fourth said: “Retired Rooney scores a free kick before Mbappe.”

Throughout his career, Rooney played in 559 games across all competitions and scored a record 253 goals for the Red Devils.

He left Everton to join the team in 2004 and returned to the Toffees in 2017.

After that, Rooney played for a while for Derby County and DC United before retiring.

Earlier in the day, Rooney had admitted that he would have liked to have played for Celtic during his career.

He told Celtic’s club media: “Celtic has always been a team I have followed and wanted to win.

“Unfortunately, I did not get the opportunity to play for Celtic. I would have liked too.

“But I did not work out and I did not get that chance.”
