Thibaut Courtois, the custodian for Real Madrid, said Thursday that he would no longer play for the Belgium national team for boss Domenico Tedesco.
Courtois was not picked to play for Belgium in Euro 2024 because he fought with Tedesco the previous year. Many people think he is one of the best goalkeepers in the world. Koen Casteels took his place for the Euros.
I’m grateful to have had the chance to wear the national shirt. Courtois wrote on his social media sites, “I never in my wildest dreams thought I’d be able to do that more than 100 times.”
“Unfortunately, after what happened with the coach and a lot of thought, I’ve decided not to go back to the Belgian national team while he is in charge.”
“I’m willing to take responsibility for this.” Looking ahead, though, I don’t think my lack of trust in him would help keep the friendly attitude that is needed.
The 32-year-old custodian missed most of last season because of an illness but came back in time to help Real Madrid win the Champions League in June. He also said that the Belgian FA understood his position and the reasons behind the decision.
“I’m sorry that this may have let down some fans, but I’m sure this is the best thing for Belgium because it ends a debate and lets the team focus on its goals.” “Thank you for always being there for me with love, support, and understanding,” Courtois said.
After France beat Belgium in the round of 16, people started to wonder if Tedesco was the right person for the job because of the way he managed the team.
The German manager, who was born in Italy, started his job in February 2023 and signed a new deal before the Euros began.
But under Tedesco, the team that was ranked number one in the world for almost three years and made it to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup has had average success.
